Air Ambulance Standby for the Amazing Race Shoot in Vang Vieng

A Seamless Safety Operation by Laos Assistance

Laos Assistance is proud to have played a crucial behind-the-scenes role during the filming of the globally renowned reality show The Amazing Race in one of Laos’ most scenic and adventurous destinations—Vang Vieng.

On October 11th, 2025, a dedicated air ambulance standby operation was deployed in response to a request from a  a U.S.-based security/safety company, entrusted with overseeing the safety of the entire filming crew. Our mission: to position a medically equipped helicopter on standby, ensuring rapid evacuation capabilities in case of emergency.

Why Vang Vieng?

Vang Vieng, while breathtaking in its limestone karst landscape and adventure sports appeal, also presents logistical and medical challenges due to its rugged terrain and distance from advanced trauma facilities. With high-risk activities involved in the race, the production team made the responsible choice to secure air evacuation readiness through Laos Assistance.

The Setup

Under the terms of our standby contract, Laos Assistance mobilised:

• A helicopter based within proximity of the site.

• A trained emergency medical team (EMT) on alert, with rapid deployment on pre-hospital emergency care and basic life support (BLS).

• A dedicated mission coordinator liaising between race organisers, safety officers, and our dispatch centre in real time.

• Evacuation routes pre-defined to either Vientiane or thereafter to Udon Thani depending on severity and need.

Our operation included pre-site reconnaissance, continuous weather monitoring, and on-ground coordination with the client’s safety advisors.

Mission Outcome

We are pleased to report that the filming day proceeded without any incident, and no evacuation was required. While our intervention was not needed this time, our presence provided peace of mind to the organisers, cast, and crew, allowing them to focus on the race, knowing that expert medical evacuation was only minutes away.

Why This Matters

In Laos, where access to immediate advanced care can be delayed due to geography or infrastructure limitations, having local standby support can make all the difference. Our Vang Vieng deployment is a testament to how preparedness, local expertise, and rapid-response capabilities are essential for high-profile international productions and operations in remote locations.

This operation reflects our commitment to being “on the ground, in the air, and ahead of the situation.”
